Welcome to Ridiculous Rebadges, a series of articles in which I go through and examine the details and circumstances surrounding some of the more infamous and some of the more esoteric vehicular rebadges throughout automotive history.

This car that serves as the basis for today’s rebadge is actually marketed under many different names other than the one highlighted in this article. However, the car/van itself is the Nissan Evalia/NV200 and the variant that this article will focus on is the Ashok Leyland STiLE (and its very odd name which is never explained). Ashok Leyland is actually an Indian brand, thus the fact that the STiLE is only sold in India. Initially the manufacturer was called Ashok until British Leyland came in and imperialized several of India’s automakers (including Hindustan, thus the renowned Ambassador...) In 2007, Ashok Leyland, generally a commercial vehicle brand, decided to bring itself to the general market gradually by partnering with Nissan to make several box trucks after a deal with Iveco drew to a close. In July of 2013 the STiLE was introduced, built in India with a 75 bhp diesel, 5 speed manual, and 8 seater capacity. It was marketed as a cheaper, more passenger oriented variant of the Evalia/NV200 with a very basic interior but more comforts for the passengers (in upper trims). The weaker Renault engine also pointed towards a lower spec model than the Nissan. Low demand saw the STiLE’s demise in May of this year, and thus one version of the Nissan NV200 is already gone. We still have the Mitsubishi Delica D:3 and Chevrolet City Express, though, if anyone really wants an NV200 but hates Nissan...

Yep, and Mitsubishi as well, but I figured Ashok Leyland is one that not many have heard of...

I’ll take the Nissan.

Also, the foreign version of the Nissan van looks better than the USDM one.

I’d personally take the Ashok just to be different, but yeah the Nissan by far is the better variant...especially in Evalia trim...

The Ashok looks a lot cheaper to me honestly...

The Nissan Elgrand is the Van to have. :)

Also why I love the new Quest so much. We rented one in Hawaii and I really appreciated having a van without the electronic and ergonomic glitches that plague the Chrysler vans...even the widely lambasted third row seats where they only fold forwards and not into the rear well came in handy, since we could stuff our scuba gear into the storage well and keep it covered to prevent other things from falling in and getting wet...
